Ditching the Water Woes

If you follow us on Instagram (and you totally should if you don’t already!), then you’ve probably seen an exciting project that we just started working on this week!

This project has been over a decade in the making. For some context, our farm is located in a bowl midway down the hill. Because of our location, we have struggled with handling the sheer amount of water that comes off of our land.

In March of 2013, I reached out to our Soil & Water Conservation District and NRCS for help for the first time. A seemingly infinite number of hoops later, we are finally here.

Last fall, we were notified that the runoff from our pastures posed enough of a resource concern that we qualified for EQIP. EQIP is basically a government program that helps farms address environmental concerns properly. Over the last year(ish), we have worked with NRCS to get engineered plans for an improved waterway. And after what feels like a lifetime of waiting, we finally broke ground!
